Conventional Treatment
If your child develops a cavity, seeking prompt treatment is essential to prevent further decay and damage. At Fox Pediatric Dentistry, we use minimally invasive restorative dentistry techniques to tackle tooth decay.
What is a Conventional Treatment, and does your child need one?
All conventional treatments may require the use of local anesthetic (numbing) agents to help make your child comfortable throughout the procedure.
A Standard Filling involves placement of a white resin based material in mild to moderate sized cavities.
A Stainless Steel Crown involves placement of a silver crown in moderate to large sized cavities. These are selective for back teeth.
A Zirconia Crown involves placement of a white crown in moderate to large sized cavities. These are selective for front teeth.
Pulp therapy involves either a pulpotomy (baby root canal) or a conventional root canal in large cavities that reach the nerve of a tooth. Pulp therapy is designed to save a child’s tooth by removing infected or damaged pulp tissue with medication in place of it to promote healing. Teeth that require pulp therapy will require a white or silver crown.
An extraction is the complete removal of a tooth that can either no longer be saved or is no longer needed. Premature removal of baby teeth may sometimes require a space maintainer.
What happens during Conventional Treatments?
If your child has a cavity, you might have questions like: How do these treatments work? How long do these treatments take?
At Fox Pediatric Dentistry, we do our best to provide optimal and comfortable dental care for your child. Dental treatments are typically completed in appointments scheduled for an hour or less. If needed, we start the process with laughing gas (nitrous) and by numbing the area with local anesthetic. From there, we either restore or remove teeth as needed. Throughout the appointment we will periodically check in with your child to ensure that they are comfortable. Once your child is all finished with their treatment, we love to give high fives and offer great prizes. If a child is having difficulty during their treatment, we will often pause or stop treatment and consider sedation for their next appointment.
