Sedation Dentistry

Fox Icon

Does your little one dread going to the dentist? Anxiety and fear of visiting the dentist is a normal reaction for many children. At Fox Pediatric Dentistry, we want dental appointments to feel relaxed and comfortable for your child. Aside from setting clear first visit expectations, we also offer sedation to help children who need it to feel safe and relaxed in their environment during dental treatment.

We offer your child various treatment options depending on each child’s level of cooperation and treatment needs.

What is sedation dentistry?

Minimal Needs

Possibly Local Anesthetic and/or Possibly Nitrous Oxide

Moderate Needs and/or Young Age

Local Anesthetic + Nitrous Oxide

Extensive Needs and/or Young Age and/or Special Needs

Deep Sedation or General Anesthesia

Local Anesthetic

Also known as “getting numb,” local anesthesia is the process of injecting a small amount of medicine into a specific site to minimize discomfort to your child during their dental procedure. Every child has varying tolerance levels; some may require more than others to achieve the same effect. We will never openly talk about or show your child “the needle” since many children strongly fear needles. Also, we ask that our parents do the same to help curb the greatest source of apprehension children have about coming to the dentist (the idea of pain or discomfort during treatment). Local anesthesia aims to make pain-free dentistry experiences.

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is routinely used in mild to moderately anxious children. Nitrous oxide can minimize pain and anxiety in a conscious patient. Laughing gas is safe and effective for routine dental treatments because it acts on the body as quickly as it leaves it. Nitrous oxide gas is breathed in. This treatment is used in conjunction with oxygen gas, and every patient is flooded with pure oxygen for at least five minutes before the end of treatment. Overall, nitrous oxide gas is the mildest form of sedation but can be very effective in mildly anxious children.

Deep Sedation and General Anesthesia

If your child requires extra help at the dentist due to factors such as young age, severe anxiety, special needs, or substantial treatment, Fox Pediatric Dentistry teams up with seasoned anesthesiologists to help make dental treatment more comfortable for your child.
